Busy Doing Nothing is the name of my radio show which airs Thursdays, 6-8 pm (Eastern time), on WVEW-LP, 107.7 FM in Brattleboro, VT, and which streams online. The name of the show comes from the Beach Boys song, Busy Doin' Nothin', from their album Friends (Capitol Records, 1968). In this song, Brian Wilson describes the mundane events of his day, gives driving directions to his house (from an undisclosed starting point), and tries to remember a friend's phone number. In other words, it is a song about the kinds of things that make up the bulk of our days, but about which songs are rarely written (or were rarely written up until then).
I am fascinated by songs -- and movies (like Stranger Than Paradise), and books (such as Found in the Street, by Patricia Highsmith) -- like this, in which not a whole hell of a lot happens.
Busy Doing Nothing, the radio show, is a freeform conglomeration of sounds, songs, and digressions. In the show, genre divisions are joyfully erased as connections are made between surprisingly diverse material. And of course, in it, not a whole hell of a lot happens.
I will post a playlist and mp3s of the show on the Being Slowly Nowhere blog every week. The mp3s will remain available for four weeks.
